Kurt Traylor has over 20 years of experience as a successful high school football coach. He comes to Robert E. Lee with a solid record of achievement and excellence in motivating both students and coaching staff.The last 17 years Traylor spent coaching in his hometown of Gilmer, Texas where he was the Varsity Run Game Coordinator, Offensive Line Coach, and Off-Season Coordinator. During his time at Gilmer High School, the team made 5 appearances in the state finals and became the 4A Division II State Champions in 2004, 2009 and 2014. By the end of the 2014 4A Division II State game, Gilmer had scored a total of 950 points to become the 2nd highest scoring team in Texas history. In 2014 Gilmer was the only school in the nation with 2 U.S. Army All-American players.

Under Coach Traylor, Gilmer has won more games than any high school in Texas Division 4A. Their overall record from 2001-2016 is 175-26, which is the highest winning percentage for over 200 games. Gilmer was also the highest scoring team in Texas for 3 years, and over 100 student athletes have received scholarships during Coach Traylor’s time at Gilmer High School. Not only did Coach Traylor play a vital partofbuilding and maintaining a tradition of excellence within the Buckeye Football Program; he had many other successes off of the field. Traylor created, developed and maintained several of the following programs at Gilmer High School: Adopt a Buckeye, Elementary Mentor Program, Pre-Game Devotionals, Meet the Buckeyes, Honorary Teachers Captains’ program, Character Trait Program, East Texas Lineman Camp, Marriage Seminar for Coaches, Academic Advisory Committee, Coaches Outreach, and the Big Brother Program for the community.

Coach Traylor played football on the offensive line at Gilmer High, Cisco Junior College, and Southwest Baptist University. He received an Associate’s Degreeof Science from Cisco Junior College and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health at Texas A&M Commerce. Prior to joining the Buckeye’s in Gilmer, Texas, Coach Traylor was a graduate assistant at Texas A&M University. Coach Traylor is married to Katie who is a graduate of Gilmer High School and Texas A&M University. Katie will be joining the TISD team as an Instructional Technology Specialist. They have 4 children, Allie (13), Rylie (11), Will (10), and Kole (8). Coach Traylor believes that the most important things in his life are faith, family, friends, and football!
