ROCKWALL - Tyler Lee needed a victory to stay on track for a playoff spot, but fell behind by double digits and never caught up in a 49-28 loss to Rockwall on Friday at Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium.
The Red Raiders drop to 4-4 overall and 1-4 in District 11-6A. Rockwall raises its record to 3-5 and 2-3 in district.
It was the DQ Game of the Week and both teams’ quarterbacks put on a show.
Lee senior Chance Amie rushed for 200 yards, highlighted by touchdown runs of 65 and 61 yards.
Rockwall junior Jacob Clark completed 13 of 21 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns. He could’ve had four passing scores as one was called back on a penalty and another the receiver fumbled the ball out of bounds stretching for the pylon. Clark also rushed for 33 yards and two scores.
Lee spotted Rockwall 22 points before attempting to rally back. The Red Raiders turned it over on the second play from scrimmage when Rockwall’s Elijah Coleman read the screen and intercepted Amie’s lofted pass intended for Ladarius Wickware.
That gave the Yellowjackets the ball at Lee’s 7. Three plays later and Clark was in the end zone for a 7-0 lead.
Rockwall used a 45-yard pass completion to help set up its second touchdown.
The Red Raiders went for it on fourth down in their own territory and was stopped short for a turnover on downs. Rockwall, with the ball at the Lee 36, needed six plays to make it 22-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Lee got rolling in the second quarter, driving 73 yards in 12 plays. On fourth-and-goal from the 6, sophomore tight end Jamal Ligon lined up on the end and snuck out to the corner with Amie connecting on a 6-yard touchdown. Mason Magers’ PAT made it 22-7.
The Red Raiders then recovered an onside kick with Keyshawn Rivas giving Lee the ball at the Rockwall 44.
Lee looked to have snuck another receiver out wide open and would’ve been a sure touchdown, but Amie’s pass was juggled and dropped. The Red Raiders eventually punted.
Rockwall answered with 14 unanswered points.
Lee got one back on a 61-yard TD by Amie, but Rockwall finished the half with a 16-yard TD pass from Clark to Jaxon Smith.
The Red Raiders had a few more big plays in the second half, two of them touchdown runs, but never threatened Rockwall’s advantage.
Lee will look to rebound next week at home against North Mesquite.
