Tyler Lee quarterback Chance Amie let his feet do the work Friday in a 49-20 victory over Mesquite.
The Red Raiders senior produced a season-high 139 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns (3, 15, 20, 22) as part of 390 yards on the ground for Robert E. Lee, which raised its overall record to 4-3 and grabbed its first District 11-6A win.
The victory is Lee’s first league success since 2015, snapping a 10-game district drought.
The Red Raiders used a smothering defense, opportunistic special teams and punishing run game to get it done.
Lee limited Mesquite to 48 yards rushing on 31 attempts while giving up 162 passing, much of that when the game was already out of reach.
The Red Raiders took advantage of a dropped snap on a punt with Jamal Ligon recovering to set up one touchdown, and later Nathan Niedrauer blocked a Mesquite punt to set up another score. Lee also had an interception from senior linebacker Tre’Veon McGill to cap a dominant defensive performance.
Leading 28-7 at halftime, Lee also successfully recovered an onside kick to begin the second half, to further make sure Mesquite would not rally back.
Red Raiders junior tailback Ladarius Wickware led all players with 145 yards on 17 carries. His 17th carry produced Lee’s longest rushing play of the game, a 39-yard touchdown. He also scored on a 9-yard run with Lanthony Simmons providing 73 yards on seven carries.
All of this overshadows junior receiver Kameron Ross, who now has two touchdown passes this season after he connected in the first half with Marquis Gray for a 25-yard strike.
The game was tied 7-7 in the first quarter thanks to a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown by Mesquite’s Caleb Boger to counter Wickware’s 9-yard score.
The Red Raiders immediately responded, driving 78 yards in 10 plays, capped by Amie’s first rushing score of the night on a 3-yard keeper. Mason Magers made his second of eight extra points for a 14-7 advantage.
The game turned further on Ligon’s stop after the Mesquite punter bobbled the snap deep in his own territory.
It took two plays for Amie to go in untouched for a 15-yard TD.
Any chance the visitors had of coming back was further dented late in the half when Ross received a pitch from Amie on an apparent jet sweep, and instead lofted a perfect 25-yard scoring strike to Gray, who outmuscled his defender for the touchdown.
Mesquite was to get the ball to start the second half, but Lee turned the tables. Following a long intermission due to homecoming, Gray was in the right spot to recover a surprise onside kick.
A stunned Skeeters team was no match to stop Lee, going the remaining 50 yards in four plays with Amie providing his best run of the game, a 20-yard scramble that ended up in the end zone.
Lee led 35-7 after that and never was threatened.
Note: Lee’s homecoming queen was Jaylah Stegall and the homecoming king was Bobby Manning.
