Tyler Lee forced three Corsicana turnovers as Kurt Traylor’s team “pounded the stone” Saturday afternoon for a 42-15 win in the final game of the 14th Annual Christus Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic.
Played on a picturesque afternoon on Earl Campbell Field at CTMF Rose Stadium, The Red Raiders never trailed. Robert E. Lee (2-0) built a 15-0 lead in the first quarter and led 22-8 at halftime.
Senior quarterback Chance Amie began his day with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Te’vion Massey on REL’s first possession. He ended it with a 27-yard scoring strike to Zaylon Walker. In between the University of Houston commit connected with Malcolm Miller for a 2-yard TD as part of going 17 of 28 for 283 yards.
“Our game plan was to come out and hit them in the mouth,” said Amie, who also rushed for 59 yards. “We just wanted to keep driving down the field and (scoring).”
Massey led Lee’s receivers with four catches for 106 yards while Walker finished with three catches for 61 yards and now has three receiving touchdowns in Lee’s first two games. Speaking of multiple-touchdown performances, Lee junior tailback Ladarius Wickware continued to add to his tally, finishing with 83 yards and two scores. He now has four TDs for the season. Jordan Printers also found pay-dirt in the second half with a 4-yard scoring run.
Corsicana quarterback Blake Hoffman did his best to spoil the afternoon. Facing a swarming REL defense all game, Hoffman rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown and also passed for 120 yards and a score.
The Red Raiders nearly squandered a two-touchdown advantage in their first win last Friday in Marshall. Lanthony Simmons made sure Corsicana did not repeat that with a timely interception in the second half.
Lee led 30-15 in the third quarter, but had just turned it over themselves with Corsicana driving to pull closer.
On first-and-10 from the Lee 20, Hoffman avoided the rush and rolled out to his right before spotting a receiver wide open in the left corner of the end zone. Hoffman attempted a long-range throw across the field, which gave Simmons enough time to recover and make an interception in the end zone.
“I looked back and I saw my dude wide open in the end zone, so I just ran and tried to get the ball,” Simmons said of the play.
It was one of two picks REL had in the game. The other came in the first half by Rhett Parker, who also made the interception in Red Raiders territory. Lee also overcame muffing a kick return with the defense stopping Corsicana on fourth-and-4 from the Red Raiders 20.
“We came out and competed just like we do in practice. We worked hard and we are going to continue to work hard,” Simmons said. “We are finally playing as a unit and we all trust and believe that we are going to do our job.”
