J.J. Barry has been coaching since 1996, and 2019 was his first year at Robert E. Lee. Coach Barry is the varsity defensive coordinator and comes to Robert E. Lee with 10 years experience as a defensive coordinator. His coaching accomplishments include 10 playoff appearances, and in 2017 under his leadership the West Rusk High School defense was ranked number one in points allowed, at an average of 7.6 points in Class 3A Division 2. He also spent time as an inside linebacker coach and special teams coordinator in the National Indoor Football League for the Wichita Falls Thunder.
Coach Barry attended Burkburnett High School in Burkburnett, Texas where he played inside linebacker, inside receiver, was a three year All-District honoree, and a member of the Red River All-Star Team Big School in 1989. Coach Barry also played basketball at Burkburnett High School where he was a shooting guard, three year All-District honoree, and set the school record for free-throw percentage in a season and career. He attended Cameron University, University of North Texas, Midwestern State Universtiy, and earned a B.S. in Education and a Masters in Education Leadership. At Cameron University, Coach Barry played basketball as a shooting guard and during his time at North Texas he played football as an outside linebacker and fullback. Coach Barry is married to Shara who is a teacher and coach in Whitehouse. They have two children, Caroline and Tripp. In his free time he enjoys traveling, outdoor activities, and spending time with family.
